Antarctica's First Light
Candide's Notebooks / July 11
I've always been fascinated, as I imagine most people are, with edge-of-the-universe sort of places, palces of extremes where most of us would never dare go but love to know about anyway. Antarctica is one of thsoe natural wandering destinations, perfectly suited in the Internet age to mid-day strolls from one's desk across the polar zone's blogs. The trips are often rewarding. Today's took me to a blog kept by several members of the huge McMurdo research station, the American outfit at the edge of Ross Island. The place is just emerging from its long winter. So Jaybird yesterday poted several pictures of the sun hinting about its return.
