Dear Harry, Netherlands
Candide's Notebooks/January 25, 2006
Dear Harry, a 42-year-old photographer from Utrecht in the Netherlands—a city of canals, railroads, and two thousand years of cumulonimbus skies—is, like our recent photographer from Atlanta, not quite interested in the human form. The cat of “Fear in the City” (right) seems to be his alter ego so far as human beings are concerned. Dear Harry seeks out the deserted and the pastoral, even in the middle of his city: an empty street, a row of park benches chattering only with themselves, a river serenaded only by her bridges, a stairwell blessedly more inviting than Hitchcock’s. All the same, his photographs have a Dutchness to them, that precision of time, space and contrasts, that gives them a neighborly, familiar feel even on first viewing.
