Jakesz Faller, Austria
Candide's Notebooks/January 15, 2006
Our photographer today is Jakesz Faller, a 37-year-old Austrian from Vienna who describes his occupation as that of a “hollow clerk.” It isn’t the first hint that Mr. Faller may want to have a few things in common with Melville’s Bartelby. What Bartelby did in person, Mr. Faller seems to be doing in photographs. He’s an odd sort, half-way between compulsive and obsessive, excessively grounded but in ways not usually associated with the word (his eye for manholes is suggestive), and more conceptual than disturbing—when he tries to be disturbing with ducks or dolls. His experiments with the medium, from quoting portraits to sampling John Wayne’s “Rio Bravo” (and other films), are worth an eye once in a while. The work was shot in Vienna and Hong Kong.
