Monardes-Mena, Chile

Asking himself what photography means to him, Chile’s Monardes-Mena says it isn’t the perfect light, the precise frame, the virtuoso technique or the new concept, but more than everything a stubborn hope for a small chance at stopping time, if only for a second, to immortalize a perfect moment. No matter what his subjects may be—a child, an old man, a typewriter, a pair of dogs—there is a fierce directness to Monardes-Mena’s work, an artful defiance, that leaves no room for doubt: More than a mere moment, it is an essence of character and form that he captures, beautifully and movingly.
