Sean Hawkey: Five Continents

Sean Hawkey, a 40-year-old from the United Kingdom, is ecumenically minded in every sense: a trained carpenter, a student of science and development, a teacher, a journalist, a grass-roots organizer, a photographer, and now a writer and web manager for the World Association of Christian Communicators (no, they’re no fundamentalists; quite the contrary). His work takes him across the continents. His photographs, direct and unpretentious, are adjuncts to his ideas—illustrations of the stories he and the Association want to tell, whether of AIDS’ ravages in Africa (see the portrait of the Malawi father and HIV victim, right), about the struggle for land and rights of Honduras’s Maya-Chorti, or his conversations with Cuban journalists about “their struggle for truth and justice.” We’re pleased to present some of his pictures and feature one of his recent articles. See his complete album at Flickr...

Young Maya Chortí girl's face, Honduras

This young man and father is attending a self-help centre for people with HIV/AIds, in Lilongwe, Malawi, where the group gives counselling, testing, education on diet and meets daily to help out with each others needs. They have a communal kitchen. Noone at the centre has enough money for ARVs.

I saw this juxtaposition in a market in Jerusalem.

Tatoos of a convict in prison, Cape Town, South Africa

A Vespa in a Roman street.

Buddhist monks playing table tennis at a monastery in Chengdu, China

Sunrise over Nadi, Fiji. One of the advantages of jetlag is that I was awake to see this.
